my question is do you know this area and are there good and bad parts of Sandy Bay area or is it all pretty good? Would it be ok to buy on Sandy Bay Road or is that a main road and should be avoided? Do you think there are any suburbs in Hobart that would be a particularly good investment? And the sound of the winters there sound heavenly! We have just finished a long heatwave in melb. which has been very hard to take:) Keep up the great inspiration and good work! Naomi Hi Naomi, Thanks for your kind comments about my website! There are no good or bad parts of Sandy Bay, in my opinion. It's a very desirable suburb. You don't get a lot of land there though being 5 minutes from Hobart, it's mainly quarter acre or smaller blocks. (Perhaps I'm biased becase I've lived in suburbia before and that's why we moved 25 minutes south to get some peace, quiet and space!) Obviously if you're buying a house overlooking the water then you're going to pay more than if you're buying a house on the other side of Sandy Bay but you still get great views of the bridge from the houses on the hilly side. Sandy Bay Road is a very busy road but people still live on that road. There's also a lot of businesses on that road. If you're trying to back out of your driveway during school pick-up or peak hour I imagine it would be pretty awful. I have a feeling that many people that live in Sandy Bay would walk rather than use their cars perhaps (edit: or they might even take the bus). If you haven't been to Sandy Bay before please go there next time you visit! As for what suburns would be a good investment, please ask a real estate agent! Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Hi Im from northern nsw and we are making the move down to tassie at the beginning of 2014, if not sooner if we sell our place. We live in a beautiful part of of nsw but are so over the humidity. MY husband and I have been watching the real estate market for the last 5 years for down there and we to wished we had bought back then as we have watched the slow increase in prices since then. I have acouple of kids and were hoping to move somewhere up near launceston. Im wanting to no of good schools up the top part of tassie. were also open to the idea of living near hobart as well. Still so much research to do. Im so excited to make this new adventure in our lifes. I would also like some imformation on sheffield or deloraine, I have to be within 30min to 45min max drive to an army cadet unit as well. So looking forward to sharing feedback and our journey with others who are making this move soon. Tania.. Hi Tania, Sorry I can't help you with Launceston as I live near Hobart. Hopefully someone from Launceston will see your post. Best of luck! Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Hi Everyone Great site - thank you! After 2 years of planning we are moving over in April from hot hot hot Perth. Getting away from the weather and our stupidly big mortgage are the main reasons. We hope to have a very small mortgage so we can both stop working so stupidly hard and actually have time to live, grow food and put back into our community. And more time with our daughter! We have settled on the Huon Valley - hopefully Franklin, which we love. Finally sold our house, and plan on renting for a bit, just to make sure it is the right spot for us. Originally we were looking up Lonnie way - Lilydale which is 30 mins NE of Lonnie is very cute and has a very good school apparently. Deloraine was also lovely - good sized township with lots of arts and crafts - bit more expensive property tho. And just south of Lonnie are lots of lovely places - Evandale, Longford... Looking forward to chatting to and meeting new Taswegians here! cheers helen Hi Helen, We're in the Huon Valley too - maybe one day we can meet up for a coffee next time you're down here! Hope you sell your house quick! Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Hi all, our plans have changed somewhat as my mum, who's in her late 70's, has decided she wants to relocate to Tassie as well. This might sound silly, but looking at some of the streets in the suburbs surrounding Hobart, a lot of them look quite steep, and I was worried that this might not be suitable for an older person. I know a lot of people retire to Tasmania so surely it can't be that bad? Anyway, Jeff and I have decided that it probably makes more sense to come over for a look around before we move, see some properties etc, and try to get a feel for the different areas. And try to decide between Hobart & Launceston too as still not sure... Now we just have to decide whether we should come in winter to see how cold it really gets, or wait until spring/summer. Oh, Jeff applied for a job too with the broadband network, based in either Hobart or Launceston, so I've got everything I can cross, crossed.

Hi Louise, thats fantastic that your mum wants to make the move to. I went to tassie for a holiday about 1 year ago and was surprised how much bigger the island was actually being there. From what we seen of Hobart there are parts that are hilly and I could see it being an issue with ageing people( I no it would be for my mum) but I cant speak for all. Winter would be cheaper in travel fares. And I guess as you said youy would get to feel how cold it gets to. You will have to let us no how you got on and what you have decided. Good luck with your hubbies job application. Tania

Well hello everyone! I stumbled across this forum and began to recall our move from NE Victoria nearly 6 years ago. Without rambling on too much in my very first post, what I thought I'd do is let everyone who is thinking about moving to beautiful Tassie that we have our amazing property up for sale here now (sad but true) as we need to move back to Vic for family reasons. I can't help but put it out there that our region seems to be the forgotten corner of Tas, and for no good reason! We are in Circular Head, about 1 hour from Burnie. A small, peaceful community that welcomed us with open arms and shared their incredible beaches, Tarkine forest wonders, fishing and the cleanest air in the world. If anyone is interested in learning more about this area I'd love to help, and if you'd be interested in checking out our property it is on this link - [Admin edit: Removed real estate link.]
Please consider this much forgotten corner of the world, ride your horse on the most amazing beach you've ever seen - year round!
Oh, and it's not as cold as everyone thinks it is!!

We might bring mum with us for a look round too.
