Hi all! We are getting ready for our Tchange in just over 6 weeks - gasp! I've been madly researching containers for moving - we are coming from Perth. There are quit e afew companies that do the pack your own option, so that is fine.
However I am worrying about the storage - we plan on renting first, so our stuff will need to be stored for 4 -6 months. Most companies will happily park the container for you in storage either over here or Melbourne or Hobart. However I am having real problems arranging insurance, as the companies only provide insurance while its on the move. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm almost thinking of changing to get all our stuff put in locked covered storage over here, then get it shipped once we buy. I'm assuming that will be much more expensive however :-( any advice greatly appreciated! thanks Helen

Hi Helen, We are moving next jan or sooner depending on the sale of our property, i to have been researching shipping containers hoping that it will be a cheaper option, (still waiting for them to get back to me) We are also going to rent first before we buy. Its great you have settled on an area to live, we have been researching tassie for almost 5 years and still cant quite settle on an area. Schools are the big one for me. I have one in a catholic school and one in high school, I will place both in a public school as the catholic school fees are much higher down there. Any how, I will keep looking back on this forum to see how you went with the shipping container. 6 weeks to go for you how exciting.. Tania

Hi Helen Congratulations on your upcoming move to Tas! How exciting!!! We're in Perth too and really wanting to relocate there asap, but would prefer to get a job there first.... not easy. Its the heat & the mortgage - both killers. I don't know about the deal with insurance on your stored container, hopefully someone who has gone thru this can reply. I will check back to see how you went as we will (hopefully) be in the same position soon too.... Louise

Hi we are also a bit concern with insurance. As our belongings are only covered by insurance when it's in transit. So will be asking my bank if they cover our Stuff whiles it's in storage in a secure look up yard. If I have any luck will post on this forum who will do insurance while stuff is in storage. Thanks.

Does everyone think its best to use a shipping container? Im confused on what to take and how to move it. We too are renting first, but unsure if we should take any of our stuff first. We might only last 6-12mths down there. So many options and decisions.......

I'd also like to know about the process for shipping containers and why people prefer this to hiring a removalist company. I am assuming it is purely a cost benefit? Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Having worked in the storage industry in Hobart for a couple of years there are a few reasons ppl choose shipping containers over units - cost and logistics are the big two. However the problem is when you get to Tassie there are very few places (at least in teh South of the State) where you can actually store the shipping container while you are sorting out your life. The place I worked technically had the space for 2 containers, but the logistics of getting them in, and access to other parts of the facility made it untenable for us most of the time. In the time I worked there I think we had maybe 3? for short term spots. In all honesty, I would get the movers in to pack, move and then unpack into a storage unit. We could offer insurance on the gear in the unit for 6 or 12 months through a broker, and add it onto your bill. Any decent storage place will work with you to work out the correct size unit needed, and help facilitate the movers/supply locks if you are not there etc.

Hi everyone We are looking at relocating from Brisbane to Tasmania at the end of this year. We have been consulting with removalists via www.emove.com.au/ they have been very helpful with working out a budget also. We are likely to use a removalist as some will store your belongings for up to 1 month. This will give us time once we arrive to sort out what we will want in our rental. We are also looking to buy in the future but want to road test an area/community before we put down permanent roots. We have found storage places in Burnie. Burnie is an industrial town so this is where a lot of the containers ships come into. Helen, we are moving to the Burnie region as the weather is more stable and warm, but not too warm. I hate the humidity in Brisbane. We interviewed the Marist Regional College. They have prep-12. The school has excellent facilities and the fees are pretty good (compared to Brisbane prices). The school has a great reputation. It is well worth a look. Burnie is quite a large town (3rd largest in Tassie). Cheers Trixie
