Hi, I am hoping to relocate from Perth to Tasmania with my hubby, 2 kids & 2 dogs. I just can't take the long HOT summers any more! I am trying to do as much research as possible as I've never actually been there. (I am originally from England tho and I like the cold lol). My really huge concern is the schooling. Currently I have an 11 year old son in Year 6 primary school here in Perth, and a 10 year old daughter currently in Year 5. My understanding is that they would both have to drop a Year level in Tasmania? Also, does schooling only go to Year 10 over there? I would also like to know the best government (ie. not private) primary & secondary schools. Its a bit difficult, because I'm not sure which area we would live in. My husband has just applied for a job/s which has a position in based in both Hobart and Launceston, so I'm not sure at all. Any help and information would be very gratefully received. thanks! Louise

Hi Louise! I'm also a perthite about to depart for tassie! Started planning it couple of years ago before either of us had visited either :-) Now its actually happening next month! Close to both Hobart and Launceston you will find good government schools - just need to ask around. One of the wonderful things about tassie is that you can be only 15 - 20 minutes outside of one of these places and be totally rural! Lilydale near Launceston has a great school apparently (we almost went there). And I'm sure there would be lots of good schools near Hobart. We are aiming for Franklin, about 5 minutes south of Hobart, where our daughter will be the 111th student! As for grades, the teachers I have spoken to say it is possible to negotiate the year. I don't want my daughter dropping back a year, but we are pretty sure the Headmaster will agree, so once you pick your school just ask!
That said, a teacher friend of mine who moved to Launceston says the curriculum is harder and more academic than in WA, so its worth keeping an eye on them! cheers Helen

Hi Helen, Ooh that's so great - thanks so much for that info! I was REALLY worried about them having to drop back a year, as my son is bright and in all the extension classes and I think he would be so bored dropping back a year. My daughter struggles a bit with maths so she could actually be helped by repeating a year, but she's 2 years ahead in English. But, if the curriculum is indeed harder than WA maybe he would be okay. I dont think our current school exactly pushes the kids either. I am so incredibly jealous that your departure is imminent. Please make sure you keep posting to let us know how you go. We are currently finishing our renovations so we can put the house on the market and see how we go. My hubby would prefer to have a job to go to before we leave as its pretty scary making the leap into the unknown, 'jobless', esp with kids to support. I work at home & can relocate anyway so am lucky in that department. Do you have job/s to go to? We haven't set foot in Tassie before and I think people think we're weird considering it, but I've always felt drawn to Tasmania and it looks and sounds lovely. Sorry for the long rambly post, & best of luck! Louise

Hi Louise, We made the move from Victoria to Lilydale Tassie early this year. I have 3 sons, all primary school age, and are attending Lilydale District School. I am still getting use to the idea of the school teaching kinder through to Year 10. The kids that go onto year 11 & 12 I am told, travel into Launceston, about 25-30 mins away, where there a couple of choices, many go the Grammar to study. There is a bus load of kids that travel each day so I am told. the community here is great, very friendly....many of them that I have met having moved here from other states or countries. I do love here though, I feel as though we are thousands of miles away from anywhere, but am really so close to any facilities you can think of!! Best of luck with it all, feel free to post again , Kellie :-)

Hi Kellie, Congratulations on your successful move! Yes, I find it strange that schooling only goes to Yr 10 there, and then a separate place for 11 & 12. Lilydale sounds lovely. I hope your boys are settling into school and making new friends. That's my kids' biggest worry - they don't want to leave their friends behind and are worried they won't find any new ones. Louise.

Hi all, After reading through previous posts, its nice to no my boys arent the only ones worried about the new school move, Its mainly my older son whos in year 8, both shy boys so Im hoping they fit in well. Kellie we are considering the move to outer launceston areas, does lilydale have much in the town. How do you find the school? And are there many students there? Sorry for all the questions. I have been researching tassie for the last 5 years and now its so close to us making a move the schools are my biggest thing right now. Congrats on the move. Tania

Hi Again,
Tania, we have move from a rural Victorian town and the boys went to a school of about 180 students. Lilydale I think has over 400 students, so a big change. They do have three sections though kinder-grade4, 5-year8, then 9& 10. The kids have separate play areas etc. My boys are particuarly shy and would be lying if I said they are well "settled" into the school as yet. But they have only had 6 weeks of school and making friends slowly. There has been an issuewith "bullying". But in defense of the school, they were right onto it, fingers crossed things have settled, so that is a positive. Staff seem lovely, I am actually off to do my "canteen bit" this morning. I feel that i need to be involved a bit to get the feel of the place. LIlydale itself isa really friendly place, we were told that by people we had met before we settled here......it does have a real "spirit" about it. It's a small community, having a supermarket, post office, Dr's Surgery, chemist, servo, hardware, takeaway, hairdressers, with a panel beaters ? I think, and a couple of antique/arty shops. Oh and a dog clipper!! It has also various groups such as the footy, lawn bowls, singing group. We travel into Launceston on a Tues after school for soccer practice and Sat for the twins to learn tennis.....Yep it's travelling, but it's 30 mins... 30 mins and you really have everything that you would be looking for in a major town.....I love that fact. Where we lived we had a couple of rural towns 1-2 hrs away, but had to drive 4 hours to Melbourne, so I really love that we are close by. Before I forget to, the school does have an attached agriculture farm, where students will do some study, (not sure when or where), but my hubby in his 50's is doing a parttime course in cattle handling!! He loves it after working at sea for 40 odd years, a real tree change! I do have to tell you that many people in town, (Launceston)...when find out you live in Lilydale, are really envious....it's seen as a lovely place to be even by the locals I am finding out. Just going back to the school, it has more students thatn Lilydale which has a pop of about 300....kids come from miles around. One more thing, there is a local weekly producers market each week in town and a fortnightly market..... Hope I haven't bored you.... Anything else I will try and answer, like I said only finding these things out from day to day.. Best of luck, Kellie

Hi all, Thanks Kellie, lots of great information, Lilydale does sound really nice. We are hoping to buy around 5 or so acres of land and house.I to come from a small community. Its about 35min to bigger shopping towns, but I find the smaller shopping town closer to us just about covers things. I used to do tuckshop at the primary school and loved it, I think its a really great way to see whats going on within the school. My second son attends a catholic school, because we found it had greater education, but I feel somewhat out of place there and havent done the canteen. It doesnt quite have the same atmosmphere as the smaller out of town schools have.Im happy to have read in one of your other posts that theres loads of markets, thats a big plus for me. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, it certainly puts some of those doubts to rest. Tania

Louise Louise, High school goes up to year 10 and then they go to a year 11 and 12 college. You really should come down and see Tasmania for yourself before you start the process of moving down here.
