Hi everyone,
I am considering moving to Launceston with my husband and 2 young children. We currently live in Cairns but the heat is getting too much for me! We have been doing a lot of reading about Tasmania but would like to know some local's perceptions on the pros and cons of life in Launceston. Any thoughts would be read with great interest!

Hi Cassie, Thanks for your question. Unfortunately I don't know a lot about Launceston as I am down in Hobart. Hopefully a Lonnie local can get onto the forum and perhaps share their views of life in Launceston. If you have some specific questions or anything that you are specifically interested in knowing about please let the board know! Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Hi everyone, I would also love to know more about Launceston. We are hoping to relocate from Perth to Tasmania and keen to get as much info as possible. Someone said to me that the air quality is not so good in Launceston?? I find that a bit odd, as I thought Tasmanian air would be very healthy... thanks.

Me again :-) Well I'm not a native, but have spent a bit of time up that way as originally that was the area we were looking at. The base line measurement for clean air is taken about 40 k away from Lonnie.... :-) But I think the valley does tend to hold fog, so maybe it also holds the smoke from wood burners? I certainly didn't notice. We thought Lonnie was lovely spot - so easy to get around, has everything you need, cutest little airport ever, and fantastic wines on both sides of the Tamar. helen

The town of Launceston is situated inside a bowl, which apparently holds smoke and vehicle pollution in winter. I can see how something like this would be a problem for asthmatics and those with breathing problems but I'm not sure how much of it is true. I say that you should take everything with a grain of salt and make your own mind up! Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Yes I heard that too...and driving into Launceston from Lilydale where we live, at times, you can see the fog etc over the town, but appears to clear? It is a great town, everything there you would need....I love the place Kellie

Well that's good to know. I guess you've got to see/experience it for yourself and not always go by other's comments - true of anywhere of course.

Also keep in mind that in winter there's fog nearly everywhere in Tasmania. Usually clears by the time the sun has some heat in it. Also depends whether you live in a valley or on a hill. If you're over the fog line you won't get the smog, but at that height you will probably be high enough to get a small amount of snow. Here in the Valley in the middle of winter the fog clears by 11 and starts setting again at 4. Never understimate those dark foggy evenings in the middle of winter, particularly if commuting into Hobart. Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au

Hi everyone I haved lived in Adelaide all my life but when I met my current partner ( she's from tassie ) we went for a holiday a couple of years ago. And I can tell you that the air and life style is excellent. Over there..I know we can't wait until we move there as looking for a better life style...all I know that Tassie is a very beautiful place. But you have decide what you want . We are looking for a quiet life style. As sick of the rat race here in Adelaide. One thing I did notice when we were over there is that people talk to you. Not like on the main land. Ok. Hope you like what I have wrote. Thankyou. Rick..
