Hi everyone!
this is my very first post, having read most of the pages of this forum (btw, a great resource!) I am planning to move to the north of Tassie in the next year or so somewhere in the Burnie to Devonport region. As I need to work out ongoing costs, please could anyone help with (even ballpark) figures on general rates and other fees such as water/sewerage and waste management charges, as factoring these costs into the budget is crucial. Also, any info re: any additional ('hidden') costs and indicative relocation costs from Sydney is more than welcome. Lastly, is anyone in a position to tell me a little about the live music scene in Tassie – i.e. local bands or opportunities to meet/jam with other musos, etc. I will be leaving a gigging group back in Sydney and don't intend to hang my guitar on the wall just yet ;-) Thank you in advance for any info anyone can provide, cheers Alex :-)

weak, weak, weak and thoroughly disappointing forum!!!
Over a month ago now I posted what I thought was a friendly opening post (read it again if you don't believe me) with legitimate questions aimed at working out living costs in Tassie. Despite 61 views as of today, nobody has dared to respond. Given the glacial shoulder I have been given, even a "hello, and now F.O. we don't want you here!!!" would have been better than silence.
Just a word or two for forum administrators... IT IS OBVIOUS YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO RUN A FORUM IF YOU DO NOT KNOW OR CARE THAT YOU NORMALLY WELCOME NEW MEMBERS OR, AT THE VERY LEAST, ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR POSTS.
This becomes particularly unpleasant, when it is obvious that you choose to only respond to/acknowledge some posts or members over others (which has been the case since I posted). All this demonstrates is that as admins you are biased and therefore unsuitable to act in that capacity even if you yourself have bestowed it upon yourself.
I am cancelling my membership because I don't want to be associated with an unfriendly, two-bob, snobbish forum. For the record, in the month that has passed since posting I got my answers and a whole lot more from other places that have been more welcoming, friendlier, more open to 'newbies' and basically more "with it" than this forum could ever hope to be.
Admins, members are not ignorable tokens, they are your forum's foundations. How you treat them is what makes it or breaks it, just like any other membership-based organisation. Before embarking on such an undertaking, you should have learned how it all works. It is not only essential so that you can run it with competence, it is also as a form of respect to people who take the time to join, read and then post legitimate queries.
A huge change in attitude and generous helpings of humble pie would seem in order. I wish you luck, you are going to need it, good bye.

Hi Alex It is a shame you didn't an answer to this post as I am also looking at relocating to the Burnie region at the end of this year. I do know that Tassie has an annual blues festival and we have seen some great local artists in pubs in Launceston and Burnie.
My daughter will be going to Marist Regional College in Burnie. I am interested in hearing from other parents that have commenced at the school. We are also looking for pony clubs or horse riding lessons in the area.
My partner and I are interested in soccer, are they are any local clubs in the area?
While I have been to Tassie over 10 times, a holiday is very different to living somewhere. Any insights on local community groups or organisations i.e. gardening, photography, bushwalking, soccer, live music, motorbikes?
Thank you in advance for your reply.
Trixie

I guess Alex isn't here any more so wont read this, however I must say that I was somewhat embarrassed in reading his/her May 29th email. I sincerely hope I don't buy a place next door to him/her or even nearby. Way too reactive and sounds totally stressed out but no excuse re verbally abusing others. I am looking at moving to Tassie, I have been researching the move, transport costs, rates etc and have gone to the local government sites for the areas where I have been looking for relevant data. Basically there is no one answer to the questions that Alex is asking - it depends. How much do you want to bring? is it container, truck or ute? use google - it is your friend. Use the phone, ring up and ask companies about shipping charges and ask them for the cheapest options and do they know an alternative. Ask for pro's and con's of XXXx (whatever) there is often someone out there with an opinion but in the end it will be about your specific situation and for that you need details. Regarding community activities try accessing the local papers and read the ads. some councils have info on community activities - some details are sparse. anyway I wasn't going to join this forum but the 2nd post from Alex is grossly unfair - it is not the forum administrators role to reply to queries - they manage the site. Probably a good percentage of those 61 people who read the post were like me - interested in moving but without answers - still in the enquiring stage. good luck Trixie (& family)

Lynn, Well said Unfortunately I live in the south of the State so have no personal experience with the north of the State. Hopefully someone from the north sees this post and can provide some good information for you about the community up there. Other than that, I hope your planning and research for a move to Tasmania is going well. Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au
