Hi, I'm a Kiwi guy who has lived in Australia for 15 years now. I started in Sydney and then moved to Melbourne 13 years ago and now I'm seriously considering Tasmania. The attraction is the climate, low population, cost of land (I want a bit of acreage for herbs and livestock) and to find a home away from home - just hasn't worked out in the two major cities). What concerns me though is transporting my (1) dog and (3) cats. I also have a pet sheep and some chickens but I guess bringing them over would be out of the question? Any suggestions for web links for the cost of bringing my pets? I guess I could ask my local vet, but I found your website www.movingtotasmania.com.au and thought I'd ask anyway. You know what? It's fantastic to have found you and to know that I'm not the only crazy person on mainland Australia who prefers the look and feel of Tasmania. Certainly is a beautiful place and I'm building with excitement that it's all going to happen. All I need is the job and I'm on my way!!! Hope to get some help from you knowleable experienced people. Marc

Marco, If you get onto the FAQ on Spirit of Tasmania, it tells you which animals you can and can't take. We are taking 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs and a cockatiel. Although I see there's not many houses to rent which allow pets at all. We were hoping to rent for a few months and then buy but it looks like we'll be buying straight away because of the pet situation. Good luck with your move.

We are moving in the next few months and bringing our 5 cats. I got a quote today on flying them down and it was $900 plus at least $65 per cage each - no way. Looks like it will be the 4 or 5 day drive via the ferry, cost on ferry $22 each cat. Bit of a difference!
And I was worried about flying them anyway, I've seen how careless some of the baggage handlers can be. Not all, but some are awful.
Can anyone enlighten me on any special requirements for cats coming in - they are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.

So far as I've discovered so far cats don't need anything special. Think it's different for dogs though. We're bringing our 2 cats! Amanda
