Hello I decided last year that I'd start saving my money so I could move myself and my two children to Tasmania. Currently living in Queensland and I am sick to death of the heat and the weather up here, uggghhhh, and after reading and watching so much on Tassie I can't help but think to myself, "Yep, that's definitely where I want to settle in my own home." It won't be for another few years (Unless, of course, a lottery win were to come into the picture!! Hehe) but I've been getting all excited about it and I can't wait til I have saved enough. Been researching areas, and so far Scottsdale seems like my #1 choice... Nice small community-centric town, walking distance to both primary and high schools, shops, et cetera. That's one of the main things I'm looking at - I need everything to be walking distance. I have no car and no interest in getting one. Oh well, plenty of time to go to keep on researching!!

Hi should be a great move for you...But when we were over there a few years ago we didn't see much public trans port. So in small country towns you do need a car. I think Sara would agree with me. If you move close to a major town you might be ok.. We will be moving this year but the expense is high as to move from S.A. To tassie. We have a budget of about $6000.00 that with a shipping container and fares across on the boat as we have 2 cars and a caravan. And a cat. So hope to be there soon. Thankyou. Rick.

As someone who's lived in several small country towns my whole life, I've never needed public transport That's what legs are for!! Hehe. And the reason I'm looking at small towns in Tas that have everything nice and walking distance and that's why by first appearances Scottsdale is top of my list. That's subject to change though!! Still have a few years to go and lots of researching to go.

I have to say that I do agree with Rick on the transportation issue. In Tasmania generally public transport is lacking (mostly because of the very low population here) and so I think that you'd need a car. Scottsdale is a very small town (we stopped in there a few weeks ago). I quite liked it there. It was nice and quiet. People seemed friendly. There is a newsagency, council offices, Services Tas and most other services there. If you ever wanted to go to Launceston for the "big shops" then I think you might be stuck, but I don't know the bus timetables for Smithton so really, what would I know?! yourfireislame, it sounds like you're doing your research and planning throughly which is absolutely the best thing you can do when you move to Tasmania (or when you relocate to anywhere really). Your plan should ensure that you are going to succeed but then you need to have a backup plan or Plan B if it doesn't work. Sarah www.movingtotasmania.com.au
